Tired of just trying to keep up?
Create breathing room in your days and peace in your spirit with this free e-course.
In 5 days you will:
- Get control of social media time
- Cultivate positive influences in your life
- Free up time and space in your home
- Lose the mind-numbing unnecessary tasks in your week
- And start ruling your schedule with an iron fist – and NO mom guilt!

I have a lot of friends who are solidly in the “type B” camp – the laid-back, go with the flow, spontaneous mom, who happily lets her kids throw Cheerios around the living room, and never stresses over a 10pm bedtime for her toddler. Scary Mommy has a great article on type B moms thriving in motherhood!
But if that’s not you –
- If you love structure
- And want a daily schedule
- And are super duper strict about food only at the table
- And get a little panicky over late bedtimes –
I’m here to tell you that it is ok to be type A!
1. Structure is good
Kids benefit from structure and routine in their days – in fact, people of all ages do! When your days have predictability, it brings a sense of familiarity and normalcy that is comforting.
And, structured days prevent the opportunity for some misbehavior, so you can spend more time enjoying your kids, and less time fighting unnecessary battles.
A known routine helps everyone, including kids, follow along with getting things done, like brushing teeth and getting dressed, feeding the dog and putting dirty dishes in the dishwasher. All with less resistance, because it’s just what we do after breakfast.
Kind of like shifting onto autopilot!
Your toddler can’t dump out four bags of rice in the kitchen if he is already occupied playing in the backyard. I learned that the hard way, haha.
2. Time is precious
Type A people are know for their scheduling, over-achieving ways. That’s not a bad thing; it can be an awesome thing!
Time is our most valuable resource, and once a day is done, it’s passed forever. Doesn’t it make sense to use that time wisely?
If we know what our priorities are, and we use our time based on those priorities, it takes away the sense of overwhelm so many of us can feel. It becomes easy to say no to commitments, rather than stuffing our days full and running around trying desperately to keep up.
Since we know we will never really catch up or finish the to-do list, prioritization is key to living with peace and purpose.
So those goal-setting sessions and hard-core planners type As are know for? Super helpful in motherhood!
3. You are who you are
God created you with a unique personality, gifts and strengths. You have your own likes and dislikes, and a life story unlike anyone else’s.
So why try to be someone who you are not?
We try to be like someone else because we:
1. Think they are better than we are (“I’ll be a great mom when I’m like Rebecca”)
2. Think we are wrong the way we are (“A good mom would be quieter than me, more fun, plan more pinterest craft-y stuff”)
But the truth is that we are called to imitate Christ, not the mom next door. When we fix our eyes on him, it stops mattering how many glitter pumpkins our kids did or didn’t paint this fall.
4. Scheduled fun is still fun
Can I be honest here? Spontaneity kinda stresses me out. I’m a planner at heart. And you know what?
That’s ok!
Scheduled fun is still fun, and some kids actually enjoy an experience more if they have time to mentally prepare.
This is especially true if you have a kid who is more introverted, and the fun involves a large group of people (I have a kiddo like this. Wonder where he gets it from?).
Embrace your type A-ness
Living authentically can take conscious effort. It can feel a little scary to own your type A personality, especially if you’ve ever been told to relax and stop being so uptight.
But it’s hard to sleep at night when you know you’re trying to be someone you’re not.
Also? Someone’s gotta keep the world organized!
So don’t apologize for who you are. Embrace it. Be the best type A mama you can be!
Color code that schedule.
Set a timer for bedtime.
Print out coordinating family chore charts.
Or whatever it is that you want to do to keep your life running smoothly.
Because God created type A mamas, too.
