Self-care. In Christian women’s circles, this tends to be viewed as a selfish concept. But it’s not!
Here is why Christian mothers should prioritize taking care of themselves.

It’s not selfish

First of all, it’s not selfish. Jesus took care of himself! He slept, he ate, he had alone time to pray to the Father. Especially because he was ministering intensely, caring for his human, physical body AND his time with God the Father was important. Motherhood is definitely intense, and also a ministry. Mama, it is NOT selfish to take care of yourself!

Your family benefits from you caring for yourself

Your little ones and your husband need you. None of us is at her best when sleep deprived and running on an empty stomach and caffeine. You need to make your own rest a priority as much as your children’s. Same with meals! You’d never think about having your toddler skip a meal. Don’t do that to yourself either. Take the time to eat an actual meal, not just your kid’s scraps!

You’re created in the image of God, and because of that, you matter

You don’t matter because you’re a wife and mother. You have value because you were created in the image of God, and you matter for that reason alone. When we get our sense of meaning and worth from our occupation as a stay-at-home mom, it’s easy to neglect ourselves. Or worse, Jesus-wash it and say that we’re laying down our selves for our children.

When we have small children, of course there will be days we skip a shower (#newbornlife), or shove a quick PB&J in our mouths while standing over the kitchen sink, bouncing a teething baby. But wrapping a poor self-image in spiritual words isn’t honoring Christ and his sacrifice.

You were created in the image of God. The dishes can wait while you nourish the body He gave you.

But I have no time for self-care!

“That sounds nice and all, but I don’t have time for bubble baths and hour-long massages”, you say. “I don’t even get to go to the bathroom alone!”

I get it! Self-care isn’t just long soaks in a tub and whole Saturday mornings away with your girlfriends. You can carve out some minutes in your days and weeks to take care of your physical, mental, and spiritual health. That’s why you need some schedules and routines in your life. It will calm the chaos and give you some breathing room.
